Players learn their draw weight, sweepers learn how far a stone carries, and skips can read the house knowing every stone behaves like the others. New curlers who learn on regulation stones can move to league play or visit another club without relearning the feel of the game.
Store the stones at rink temperature so they are ready to play and do not sweat when they go onto the ice. Keep the running bands dry and clean, since the running band is the only part of the stone that touches the ice. Have the handles checked each season and tighten or replace any that have worked loose. A little routine care keeps the set consistent from the first draw of the season to the last.
